Crime Beat: Reader Inquiries

Jeremy wants to know:
Just wanted to notify you guys that my wife and I both had our cars rifled through last night (9/13) on Elizabeth between Noe & Castro. About $250 of stuff was taken (sunglasses & Bluetooth speakerphones), but the weird thing is I'm 99% certain my car was locked yet there was no sign of forced entry. I don't know about my wife's, but I always lock my car. It's made me wonder if some savvy thieves are using "code grabbers" somehow to intercept keychain lock/unlock signals. Snopes.com says it's possible but unlikely. I'd be very curious to know how many other cars on our street experienced this, and if they were locked.
And MH asks:
Walking home from work 9/14 @ 6PM, 6 cop cars blocking Jersey Street. A block away on Church, I almost got run over by a maroon van haulin a** up to Diamond Heights and a Honda flying right after him. Coincidence?
Update (9/16): A link for reporting crime is in the comments.

Same night as the first dude: 9/13 somewhere between 8PM and 10PM, on 22nd between Noe and Castro, someone (probably the same people) broke the window of my friend's car and took a package. Brazen not only because it was before 10PM but also right under a streetlight.

BEWARE I live on Sanchez north of Elizabeth. Last week sometime in the early a.m. someone entered my car--the doors were open--and went through it and found nothing of value except 2 dollars in quarters in the change tray and my used sweatshirt with a street value of five bucks at most That night my friend on Fountain says someone opened his car, got into the trunk and took off with his brief case. Last night my neighbor told me the window on his car was broken and whoever took his GPS from the glove box and its holder, which was in plain view. DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR CAR EITHER IN PLAIN VIEW OR IN THE TRUNK.

Ugh! Last week my car was rifled through on Elizabeth between Noe and Castro! I ALSO was sure I locked my doors. Jeremy, this is Jenny, your neighbor :) I didn't have anything of value, but still feel violated...

It seems a little silly, but it's actually worth filling out a police report. They do track car break-ins.

One day last week (maybe Wednesday?), I heard some commotion outside on Elizabeth between Castro and Noe, around 2:30am. I looked out the window and saw some guy (tall, skinny, crew cut) as he jumped in a fast little red car, and sped away. Right in front of our house. He sure was in a hurry! Looked very suspicious. Neighborhood watch time? -r3cgm

There really should be a neighborhood watch around here. People think Noe Valley is safe and get complacent - which makes this place easy pickings for predators from outside the neighborhood. Like rats they'll flock here until the cops actually make some arrests.

My car was "broken into" around 9/1.. I just assumed I left the doors unlocked, but reading all of these posts, I'm not so sure. My car was on 23rd between diamond/eureka. They took my GPS... they were very tidy, didn't leave a mess at all, seemed like they took their time. hmm...

Back in February, Bevan Dufty and Mission PD Captain Stephan Tacchini were at the NV Democratic Club Town Forum. The word: "Victim of a theft or break-in? Report it! Resources are allocated to a police area based on the number of reports and the department maps trends. You can report online here."

Hi, all--I am on the board of the Upper Noe Neighbors, and we've had the Ingleside police captain & his officers at our meetings in the past.

Key thing: Don't leave anything of value visible in your car--or in the trunk/glove compartment.

If you see any suspicious activity happening in the street, call the non-emergency number: 553-0123. I called it one time for a potential smash & grab near Alamo Sq Park, and they sent a car over pretty quickly.

Noe is unfortunately a real hotbed of auto-related theft.

Just to add...yep, we've had some of this on 22nd between noe and castro.

I live on Castro just south of Elizabeth, and I'm serious disturbed by the clustering of crime right around the corner from me. I would gladly engage in a neighborhood watch program. You may e-mail me at adam@threerings.net.

My Subaru Outback was "broken into" several times in the past couple of years and stuff was spread all over the car... but no damage or lost goods. It was strange.

I would disagree with Snopes on this one. A few years ago my Acura TL was broken into on the street, under my window, in the middle of the night, silently, when the alarm had been set, and stolen. The car eventually got recovered -- the guys at the body shop we took it to for "clean up" after we got it back said they see code-grabbing happen all the time...standard fare especially for the experts in SF.

My car was also broken into on 24th street in late August... my doors were also locked. They didn't find anything of value so they just took my AAA maps. I'm still mad about it, the nerve!

Hey, don't be mad... Maybe they were just lost for directions. And also had a drug habit.

I picked my boyfriend up from the airport last week and we left two of his three suitcases in my trunk on 25th between Castro & Diamond. We definitely locked the trunk and the main part of the car. Came back a day later and the lid was wide open and both suitcases were gone. No sign of forced entry.

Here's where it gets extra weird: we get a call from a guy who says he found a bunch of suits that were in the suitcases and a lot of clothing "strewn about" on the street down by the hospital at Valencia & C.Chavez. He tracked down our number from the dry cleaning tags. The suits were the most valuable things in these bags - why would anyone steal suitcases and then throw out the most valuable contents?

My mini cooper was rifled through twice (within the last month around Noe & 22nd), and I'm *certain* I locked the doors. Fortunately, nothing of value was in the car. Hmmm... I wonder if there's a way to change the code on the car.

My car, a Mazda Miata has been broken into now 4 times in the past 2 months. It's a convertible, so they just slash it, and you can see the slash marks on it. You would think they would think WE would be smart enough to not leave anything in the car because we don't. But yet this keeps happening. There's nothing in our car!

BUT it always happens to us on Church St btwn 23rd and 22nd on west side- probably something about all the houses being on a hill there. It seems like it's the same person everytime.

My boyfriend's car was broken into in early January 2010 right in front of the house around 1 am. They stole the GPS, which was locked in the glove box. We live on Cesar Chavez and Noe. His car was absolutely locked.

I had my car broken into while it was in my garage...I was returning late at night from a trip, and in my haste to get inside I must have left the garage door open. They stole my work laptop (some junky ancient HP) which was actually a blessing and some of my favorite clothes packed in luggage which was a bummer, especially a nice worn in pair of loafers. But the coup de grace was that they stole a tux I had rented from Selix and was planning to return the next day.

At first I chuckled at the thought of some crack head walking up and down market street in a stolen tux...that is I chuckled until I called Selix and they told me they were going to charge me full retail for the tux (like 800 bucks). This was some polyester piece of junk that was already somewhat shiny and threadbare. It was a HUGE hassle, and they finally came to their senses and let me pay around 200 and be done with it. It took like 6 months. Nightmare.
