Noe Valley Town Square: A Few Notes From Second Meeting

We weren't able to attend. The following is from Murphstahoe:

Not much new other than the "3 to 4 million" and "turns out there can be some negotiation on price."

A guy from the architect did a slide show that was mostly a summary of the data from the last meeting.

One woman spoke up to say that she had a client who wanted that property before it became the parking lot but there was a disagreement with the Friends of Noe Valley and her client lost.

50ish people. Rafi, Rebecca, email from Wiener. 15 people on the ballot for board. Erin (I forget her last name) came up to me and said she was a big supporter of the plaza, she was running for board and excited about it but nervous. I said "Jill counted there are 15 on the ballot and there are 15 spots, so..."

Noe Valley Town Square: Second Meeting And Next Steps

Tuesday is the second community meeting about the potential to turn the 24th St parking lot between Sanchez and Vicksburg into a plaza or other non-car centric space. To recap, the plan is a public/private partnership to buy the lot from Noe Valley Ministry. To that end, Todd David sent out the following: "I heard from SF Rec and Parks late last week. The Farmers' Market Parking Lot on 24th Street was appraised at a range of $3 million to $4 million." Expect an update of what's been happening since the July 15th meeting as well as information for next steps. And this from the FoNV September Newsletter: "CMG landscape architects will present an overview of comparable spaces and help folks think more deeply about what they’d like to see the Noe Valley Ministry parking lot become."

Overheard on 24th Street

“Mommy, what are hot sluts?” The 6-year-old with the simple question was reading the cover of this week’s SF Bay Guardian through the glass of the news rack next to La Boulange. By Friday (when we went to get a photo) every single copy had been cleared out of all the news racks on 24th St. Did the mommy in question censor the news racks or is Noe Valley that eager to get their hands on the latest Sex Issue?

Live The Dream: Prime Corner Space For Lease

For lease: 3751 24th Street at Chattanooga. "Wonderful Hi Visibility Commercial Space ... 20+ foot ceilings ... Corner locations are prime and rarely available ... all the foot traffic in Noe Valley must walk by the space to get to 24th Street/Mission transportation."

Now that the moratorium on new Noe Valley restaurants has lifted you could open your own cafe with a parklet out front (with soon-to-be-easier permit process), or leave it as is and operate your own cigarette / malt liquor / lottery ticket market. At $5500/month, a yoga studio, nails/waxing or children's art studio doesn't seem viable.

All that assuming you can handle dealing with the landlord. Looks like he/she will have no problem airing your dirty laundry: "It is currently being used as a small grocery/liquor store J&J Grocery, their lease is done January 2011, possibly sooner because they are having internal conflict with their management."

Supes Race: District 8 Candidate Forum

Last chance to hear from all four candidates to replace Bevan Dufty as District 8 Supervisor here in Noe Valley is tomorrow night at the monthly Upper Noe Neighbor's meeting at the Upper Noe Rec Center. Bill Hemenger, Rafael Mandelman, Rebecca Prozan and Scott Wiener will answer questions submitted to UNN President Vicki Rosen.

Supes Race: Bill Hemenger Opening Campaign Office In Noe Valley

From the press release:

Bill Hemenger, Democratic candidate for District 8 Supervisor, will open a second campaign office in the heart of Noe Valley, at 4128 24th Street, between Castro and Diamond. This location will serve as an outreach center and information hub for the residents of Noe Valley, Diamond Heights, and Glen Park. Bill is the only candidate in the District 8 race with two campaign offices.

Bill’s new Noe Valley office will complement the campaign’s official headquarters at 2324 Market Street, between Noe and Castro, serving Duboce Triangle, Upper Market, and the Castro. Bill saw the need to reach out to the residents of Noe Valley and beyond, who often feel overlooked in supervisor elections. The opening of the second office is in response to the flood of requests for information from voters in the more residential neighborhoods of District 8.

Rumors: The Plaza to Parklets drama continues – the NVMPA says merchants want a say in where the parklets will be located, with several retailers vowing (off the record) to fight them outright. The locations being considered are: 24th Street in front of Martha's, Noe Bagel,Toast, and the Noe Valley Ministry lot near Vicksburg. [Ed- Fasten your seatbelts… it's going to be bumpy.] The next Friends of Noe Valley meeting will be on Sept. 28 at James Lick where you can vote on the officers and board. There will also be a presentation on the Town Square and supes candidates have been invited to weigh in. The Noe Valley Farmer's Market board had a "special meeting" in August to discuss market vendors and volunteers supporting supes candidates (not allowed). Rebecca Prozan opened her campaign headquarters a block away from the Market in July. Harry Aleo's Twin Peaks Property is becoming a music store – opening date is mid Oct. The colorful Twin Peaks/Aleo memorabilia went to family, Noe Valley archivists Bill Yenne and Joel Panzer, an estate seller, and to the NVMPA. Accent on Flowers (next door to the future music store) is consolidating to Flowers of the Valley across the street; Blue Bottle Coffee and Design Quarter open.
