If this is true then I am curious about their reason for calling the cops on the fruit guys.

Not sure what the folks at Pasta Gina are worried about they already have a following that seems pretty loyal. Not to mention their prices are pretty high.

I'm confused. Does the neighborhood not like the fruit guys? I think they're pretty awesome myself.

If this is true, I'll be reconsidering my patronage of Pasta Gina. That owner, or someone dear to him/her, may be standing out on a corner six months from now, trying to feed their family.

I live over the hill in Eureka Valley. On my way home yesterday evening, I saw a fruit dude standing in the growing dark & cold at 18th & Douglass, around the corner from where I live. All the issues raised in the comments in the previous Fruit Dudes post ran through my head. In the end, compassion won out--even though I usually buy only organic fruit, I bought $6 worth of non-organic strawberries from him.

I think it's safe to assume that the cops have been doing the RIGHT thing and turning a blind eye on the Fruit Guys. It's not like the Fruit Guys are hiding. Cops drive through this area all the time.

Pasta Gina, if you did call the cops, shame on you. (Also, shame on you for your outrageous prices.)

Daniel,
why didn't you just hand him (the fruit seller) $6 as a pure to help him out vs. buying the fruit? I know that there's a difference mentally 'earning' vs. receiving a donation, but still, I don't get it.

Reason: probably $1 went to the seller (probably more like $.60) and $5+ went to the (not poor, not on the block in the late night) dude that is spearheading this operation from San Jose.
Oh, and the $5 that ended up in that other guys' pocket - he's not paying any tax on that, he's not funding anyone's healthcare, he's not abiding by any health codes.

I get the charity aspect, but I just don't like seeing the $5+ go into the other guys' pocket who's running this.

Now, if you were to say SF legally allows this and they were representing a local grocery store, I'd be buying from them all day long.

Anonymous @ 2:19,

Thanks for your explanation of the economics, which I tend to agree with. Had I not just come back from a long run after a long day, I might have had more mental energy to think it through further & better, and just given him some money.

Is Pasta Gina just daring me to start calling the DPT on the 50% of their clientele who double parks in front of the store?

It seems to me that before piling on Pasta Gina any more, we ought to try to find out if the rumour is true.

Does anyone who has a personal relationship with them want to talk with them and find out what they have to say?

Gee whiz! When is this blog going to figure out that you don't republish stuff for all of us that you haven't checked out yourself, to verify the accuracy of this hearsay. Maybe Pasta Gina did call the cops or maybe they didn't. Why don't you, whoever you are, ask them? WE all know where there store is, but we have no idea where yours is. Rumors are you live in Modesto. Is that true?

well, the fruit guys seem to be gone - just when i could use a big 'ole flat of reasonably priced strawberries to make some strawberry-rhubarb pies. welcome to Snoe Valley, a friendly neighborhood for (almost) everyone!

Yeah, they live in Modesto---with an obvious holier than thou attitude....and not at all modest.
I guess that is the way all of you are in Noe Valley, these days.

honestly, don't the police have better things to do with their time than "remove" some fruit guys?

They are not really bothering people —unlike the annoying clipboarders or panhandlers– and given the budget crisis and host of other city issues, this seems very, very petty.
