Open: Tatataki Sushi on Church St

Now open in the old Deep Sushi space, Tataki South is a second outpost of the sustainable sushi spot of the same name on California St. The website for Tataki still hasn't been updated to announce the new space, but Tablehopper reports "The menu will continue their focus on only serving sustainable sushi, although since there is a robata grill, they now have a yakitori section they’ve added as well. There are also even more vegetarian and vegan selections."

Hours are Mon-Fri 11:30am-2pm, and dinner nightly starting at 5:30pm. Call ahead if you plan to go--hours are subject to change as they "gauge the needs of the neighborhood."

Suspended: Tamasei Sushi Liquor License

Reader Jennifer sent us this tip about Tamasei Sushi at 3856 24th Street (@ Vicksburg):

"Liquor license suspension for the little sushi place on 24th between Church and Sanchez. Posted on the front windows. There was a sign a few days ago saying that they were closed for vacation, but maybe it was because they got busted."

The sign in the windows of the nook-sized sushi spot says the alcohol license has been suspended "indefinitely" as of June 10, 2010. Meanwhile, the California ABC site still shows the license is active and there are no previous violations - and the restaurant was open for business today.

Tamasei is on the site of the old Matsuya restaurant which closed in 2006 and was allegedly the oldest sushi bar in SF. According to Wikipedia, the owners of the current restaurant are the founders of the Harupin-Ha Butoh Dance Company.

Update: A reader writes: "The reason the license was suspended was because he went on vacation and forgot to pay the fee. Should be cleared up soon."

No longer a rumor, Deep Modern Izakaya will be hosting a "soft opening" August 26th through September 16th, Monday-Friday. There are two seatings -- 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. They are welcoming friends, family and the community but requesting that you make a reservation due to limited space. Email reservations@deep-sf.com or by call 415.648.DEEP (3337). 1740 Church St. @ Day.

Looks as though La Boulange Cafe and Bakery is wasting no time in preparing their storefront in the space recently known as Noe Valley Pizza Restaurant. 3898 24th St. @ Sanchez.

Deep Sushi: Opening or Clearing Out?

Deep Sushi abruptly closed at the end of last year, and sold in February (buyer rumored to have ties to Ozumo). About a month ago the Deep Sushi signs disappeared from the window, and now Mark tells us:
I just noticed that the long dormant spot where Deep Sushi used to be (on Church-between 29 and 30th) is finally seeing some action. Workers were spotted there the last few days and now they have covered the windows with construction blinds. Perhaps a new restaurant is finally going to use this great space?? Or maybe the owner is just going to sell some of the gear inside...sigh.
Buzz reports that "as we were waiting for a table at toast yesterday, i spotted something curious in the window of the old deep sushi locale...windex(!). sure, they could be just cleaning....but me thinks something is afoot!"

FWIW, no new permits have been filed and the liquor license remains untouched since February. So is this much ado about nothing or is Upper Noe Valley getting its sushi back?

Food Bites

A quick round-up of the latest Noe Valley food news:

Deep Sushi: No solid evidence (yet), but Eater is reporting that it's been sold. Possibly to people involved with Ozumo. At any rate, still closed.

Chocolate Covered: It doesn't come in a gold wrapper, and you can't win a trip to the factory, but you can track the progress of the cacao beans used in your $16 Chocolate bar. Your purchase will also pay for a new tree in the rain forest. Made locally, and only available at Chocolate Covered on 24th St or in the Financial District at Fog City News.

Bernie's is hosting girlbiz again this Saturday (Feb 7) from 9am-1pm.

1298 Church St: We checked in with Regent Thai about the "high end vietnamese" restaurant at Church and Jersey. A staffer said the owner has placed the project on hold, but we've been unable to get a hold of the owner. Anyone know more?

Contigo: Brett has recieved over 1000 applications for 16 positions so far. And? Still advertising.
