NVV October 2019: We Read It So You Don't Have To

Front Page: The J Church line is notoriously unreliable; Reliving the 1989 Loma Prieta quake in Noe Valley; The Town Square before it was a Town Square (spoiler: it was a gas station and auto shop in the 70s and then a church parking lot in the 90s).

Letters: A neighbor suggests the sidewalks of 24th St are beautiful and well kept - but shouldn't be power-washed so often.

Cost of Living in Noe Valley: The average price of a single-family home in Noe Valley is $2.8 million.

Store Trek: Toci Wellness, 816 Diamond at 24th St.

Short Takes: New lights are being added to the Town Square to make it more festive and safer; a lighting ceremony will happen on October 26 at 6:30pm. Spooktacular, a Halloween celebration is back for the third year on Sunday October 27 and on Halloween, October 31.

Rumors and Tidbits: The makers of The Last Black Man in San Francisco will be showing their semi-autobiographical film as a benefit for Video Wave, which they fear is “the Last Video Store in San Francisco” on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Noe Valley Ministry. The Noe Valley Girls Film Festival was a huge success. Doggy Style is closing by the end of the year and DS owner and NVMPA president Rachel Swann wants to open a wine bar. Toast on 24th is closed thanks to a lease expiration and pending seismic retrofit. Chez Marius is closed. The former Le Cupboard space on Church St will become a new restaurant called Inle Burmese and should open Oct 8. Pomelo on Church St is closed (see full note here). Also on Church, the former storefront for Curator will become Delights by Lisa offering fresh baked sweets by a Noe Valley native. Readings at Charlie's Corner will no longer be free; they cost $10 (!) per child and $5 for siblings. Shoe Biz is closed. A psychic is back on 24th St. And animal rights activists protested at Whole Foods.

Front Page: Clipper St traffic calming will start to happen in 2018; the city is approving more tall multi-unit building on 24th St but neighbors are not thrilled; BistroSF Grill and Chez Marius feature live music on certain nights; the Noe Valley Gala fundraiser is happening Oct 27; lots of Halloween fun happening on Oct 29 at Noe Valley Pet Company and in the Town Square.

Letters: The St. Philips 79th annual festival was a big success, writes the school principal. 

Cost of Living in Noe: The average cost of a Noe Valley home tin August was $2.5 million and the most expensive home sold was $3.95 million; the average price for a condo was $1.6 million.

Short Takes: Halloween happiness: Merchants on 24th St will be welcoming trick-or-treaters on Halloween from mid afternoon to dusk - or catch the early fun at the Halloween pet parade on Oct 29 starting at Noe Valley pet co from 2 to 5pm. The Town Square will also host a Spooktacular on Sunday October 29 from 3-7 pm.

Store Trek: Urban Remedy, 3870 24th Street at Vicksburg

Rumors and Tidbits: We had a heat wave in SF in Sept and it was very, very hot in Noe Valley; There are lots of vacant storefronts on 24th St; District 8 supe candidate Rafael Mandelman has taken over the shop space next to Just for Fun through the June 2018 election; Mehak Vohra, a 21-year old tech entrepreneur and Noe Valley resident is running for mayor - as is NV resident Mark Leno; Wednesdays are sauna days in the Noe Valley Town Square from 6:30 to 9pm every week; The Star Bakery sign has been hijacked by GetzWell Pediatrics (bummer); Stephen Moore is opening his mercantile shop to the public this month in the spot where The Ark used to be; Astrid's Rabat is celebrating 40 years in Noe Valley; and the 2nd annual NV Girl's Film Festival was a big success this year (despite "a lot of submissions by middle aged men") and some of the winners are on YouTube.

Front Page: Realtors love drone photography for marketing (like this one of 147 Day Street) - neighbors just wish the annoying flying machines would go away; The Noe Valley Community Benefit District turns 10 and celebrates transforming Noe Valley's downtown area from a "frumpy shopping strip to an attractive commercial corridor that draws tourists and locals alike;" The guerilla gardeners of 22nd Street have cleaned up their steps; Where to go and what to do in Noe Valley on Halloween.

Letters: The Glen Park History Project thanks the NVV for the article on Glen Canyon trail improvements; Coyotes have reportedly been spotted 3 times at 25th and Hoffman (still no pictures); The flowers at 1566 Guerrero honor the memory of Alicia Titus, a United Airlines flight attendant who died on flight 175 when it was flown into the south tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Features: Local Democratic Club and Supervisor Scott Wiener say no on Props F and I, yes on D.

Cost of Living in Noe: The average sale price for a home was $2.6 million.

Short Takes: Harvest Fest has been replaced with Fall Fun Day this year on Oct 24 - a day of no street closures but lots of fun on 24th Street [Ed.--can't find any info online]; Holy Innocents Church at 755 Fair Oaks is turning 125; A final community meeting for the Noe Valley Town Square will be on Oct 13 at 7:30PM at St. Philips - it breaks ground in January 2016; Cliche Noe is featuring night photography by a local artist Graham Perry through Nov. 2; Lots of local readings this month at Folio Books; A memorial for Vicki Rosen will be held on Oct. 14 from 7-9 pm at the Upper Noe Rec Center auditorium.

Rumors and Tid Bits: La Bou is back - soon; Cradle of the Sun has moved to West Portal; Common Scents is closing at the end of the December because of dropping sales and high rents - owner Jan van Swearingen will reopen the shop online at CommonScentsSF.com [Ed.-- it's not live yet - can someone help her get at least an email entry form up asap?); Video Wave has moved but the Peace Pole has gone missing; no news on the old Real Foods space and no permits have been filed; The new Noe Valley Town Square will be getting a bathroom after all at a cost of $600,000, thanks to an anonymous donor; Horner's Corner is closed and turning into Hamlet - it will reopen at the end of October (hopefully); The storefront vacated by Ambiance at 3989 24th St is still not rented; the low-flying copters in September were part of a radiation study; Happy Donuts was named a top 7 donut shop by Eater; Al's Place at 26th and Valencia was named the best new restaurant in the US by Bon Appetit; Starbucks should have the permits needed to bring back the sidewalk benches by the end of October says the manager; Larry Lauterborn of Noe Valley Cheese Company lost his house in Middletown (South of Clearlake) in the recent Valley Fire - friends have set up a fund if you want to pitch in.
