Benefit/Fundraiser for Noe Valley Fire Victims on 24th Street

Reader Aaron Bailey left a comment on the original post about the fire and wrote to tell us:
As you may have heard, the residence of 4051 24th Street experienced a devastating fire this past Saturday, September 10th. To help the displaced residents, we are organizing a benefit/fundraiser:
Where: Valley Tavern
Address: 4054 24th Street
Time: 4pm – 8pm, Saturday September 17

We understand this is short notice but these victims are in need of your kind assistance. We are collecting items for our raffle and turning to you in hopes that you would be able to donate to this cause. We appreciate your help and consideration!
For more info contact Aaron Bailey or Heather Romaine.
Update: The event has already been postponed - see comments. Stay tuned ...

Hello all-

Thank you for your support!

A new and larger event is being planned for the first week on October, so sadly this event is no more.

Catherine Bergstrom is heading this event and if you want to participate, please contact her at bergstrom.catherine@gmail.com

Thanks!!

I'm sure the building owner's insurance will take care of most of their needs, and I assume at least some of the residents probably also had renter's insurance. This is what insurance is for.

Thanks Ron Paul...

As far as I know the owner's insurance will not cover what we have personally lost and most of us didn't have insurance.
I think we all know what insurance is for but we are grateful for the outreach from those in the neighborhood that want to help. It's a tough time and there is no need a back and forth in these comments.

When I was a renter, I always carried renters insurance. Why would you not?

btw: how did the fire start? so curious.

When I heard someone's house burned down, I decided not to judge them, be kind, and helpful. Why would you not?

When I was a human, I decided to be kind to others in their time of need, not pass anonymous judgement. Why would you not?

So I will speak for myself. I was living there for one week and had a list of things to do. I didn't get around to it. I've always had it in the past, this is the first time I didn't. So, with that said, how about we leave these comments for those that aren't going to question what can't be changed now? If you have a personal issue or view of this please refrain from commenting or direct them to me in an email and I will talk to you. The people trying to help the 7 of us, people that were strangers to us just a few days ago, are amazing and a model for how people could and should act. Again, please don't turn this into a back and forth and diminish what they are doing.

It is so easy to sit in judgement after an event has occurred. If you have nothing nice to say, keep it to yourself. Please.

I am the one organizing the event on 10/6 at The Valley Tavern. If you really want to say something ugly, contact me directly.

I did not know any of these neighbors when I found myself asking Vince Hogan to help. It has been a great experience. I would do it again.

BTW, I would probably help any of you.

I posted the original comment about insurance:

"I'm sure the building owner's insurance will take care of most of their needs, and I assume at least some of the residents probably also had renter's insurance. This is what insurance is for."

All I meant was to put a reassuring bit of info alongside the panicky vibe that was coming from the fundraising appeal and reassure that it might not be as bad as it seemed. Insurance is there for a reason and every homeowner is required to carry it. If tenants didn't have renter's insurance they may still be covered by the homeowner's. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to start a comment war.

I'm sorry too. I didn't mean to sound like a total jerk. I'm sorry for what the residents are going through -- I'm sure a home fire is an awful thing to deal with. I'll look for items to contribute to the raffle, and I'll be at the fundraiser. I wish everyone well.
