Blue Church: Demolished

The developer may not start construction for 9-10 months (according to the Voice), but they're not risking losing the project to appeal after such a lengthy battle for permits.

Update: A couple reader-submitted photos from just before the Blue Church was only a hole in the ground.

Goodbye to the Smurfs Church. Welcome soon to be New Condominiums!

We live near this building, and have for years admired the work that the church has done with the poor and homeless. We'll miss the sidewalk sales, BBQs, carwashes, and Sunday morning music and hand-clapping spilling out of the church. Here is yet another example of African-American and Latino community being displaced in order to build condos for rich people in our city.

Good riddance to an ugly building.

That area needs a boost in foot traffic, condos are better for business.

Didn't exactly love living next to this place, but I am even less excited about living next to a hole in the ground.

Perhaps the church has changed in recent years, but I certainly don't remember the idyllic situation described above. For the last three years, it's been an eyesore. I'm sure the people that attended were perfectly fine and its initial mission was laudable, but it sure hasn't seemed that way since I have lived here. Still, I would prefer it to the hole in the ground.

To Anonymous at 3:50pm...I think there was something in the latest NVVoice about how the developer is trying to talk to the neighbors about what to do in the meantime/till they can start building. I would think something (plants?) would be do-able while folks wait.
It would be very cool if they did some sort of community garden till the building came along (so long as everyone realized that there would be an eventual 'end' to the garden).

This is good news for NV...an eyesore finally gone for some decent housing. I welcome the new project.

I'm on the board of the Upper Noe Neighbors, and we've had the developer at more than one meeting. He seems like the type to work with the neighbors...Regardless, there will be market-rate condos here within the next couple years.

What a week for demolitions in Noe. 1409 Sanchez is now a hole in the ground as well. (via socketsite)

Have you seen the 1409 Sanchez demo between Duncan & 27th Street? Not quite as dramatic, but a small cottage was pulled down to make way for a two-unit building.
