NVV July/August 2015: We Read It So You Don't Have To

The Noe Valley Voice is published ten times a year and has been a neighborhood fixture since 1977. Here are notable highlights from the latest issue. Links are to stories we've covered here on NVSF or other resources. Follow the NVV link at the bottom for full articles and all the ads.
July/August 2015
Front Page: San Jose Avenue traffic calming isn't working [for cars]; the earthquake shack was ruled a historic resource under the California Environmental Quality Act; Airbnb hosts are successfully colonizing Noe Valley - there are currently 227 rentals in the hood with an average price of $212 per night; Lhami Sherpa, co-owner of Holy Kitchen on 24th St has family affected by the Nepal quake.
Letters: A hater complains about the benches in front of Martha & Bros; the Garden Tour was a success and well-sponsored by Voice advertisers; a neighbor doesn't like the produce selection and high prices from the new owners of Church Produce.
Features: The bar at 1600 Dolores St has new owners and will be called The Bar on Dolores Street; Horner's Corner is closed and John Dampeer of Caskhouse is buying the bar/restaurant - still no word on planned changes or when it will reopen. Bliss Bar is becoming Tom Rai, a restaurant with live music. RIP local activist Vicki Rosen.
Cost of Living in Noe: Hotter than the surface of the sun. The average house price is up 10 percent year-over-year to $2.4 million according to Zephyr data.
Store Trek: The Podolls (3985 24th St)

105th Anniversary of the SF Quake – Scene from Noe Valley
Tomorrow morning marks the 105th Anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (5:12 a.m. on April 18, to be exact). If you're wondering what it was like to be in Noe Valley during the Big One, neighborhood buildings were largely spared the quake damage and ensuing fires. But the 7.9 – 8.25 magnitude quake and aftershocks sent people around the city outdoors for days. This picture was taken after the 1906 quake on Valley Street.
For more photos of other parts of the city after the quake, the Chronicle reports that the SFMTA has released a trove of rare photos taken by John Henry Mentz, the photographer for United Railroads, the city's transportation operator at the time. Uptown Almanac has some of the best highlights here, including this astonishing one of City Hall.

Japan Disaster Hits Home In Noe Valley
The Japan tsunami/earthquake/nuclear disaster is still unfolding but plenty of local merchants are finding ways to help:
Hamano Sushi (1334 Castro @ 24th) is matching donations to relief funds - and will put your name on the wall with one of these cards pictured.
Patxi's Pizza is holding a fundraiser on April 5: "Ten percent of all proceeds will be donated to the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund established by the JCCCNC, Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, based in San Francisco. Purchases from dining, delivery, pick up, or gift cards at lunch and dinner are all included. Patxi’s is hosting these fundraisers as a part of our ongoing “52 Weeks of Giving” campaign for 2011."
Know other local groups pitching in? Please post them in the comments.
Update (3/23): Shoe Biz is hosting a benefit on March 26th - buy TOMS Shoes and Shoe Biz will match (x2) with a donation to tsunami victims.

The Big Rumble: What Happens To Noe When The Earth Shakes?
Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake with events around the Bay Area like The Big Rumble. Many sites are collecting stories and we'd like your stories too. While Noe is entirely on bedrock, there was a whole lot of shaking going on. St. Paul's sustained near-fatal damage, and we found various reports of things knocked off shelves and neighbors helping each other. Best we can tell, Noe escaped largely unharmed.
Were you here -- what happened in Noe Valley? Please tell your story in the comments.
