Re: Speeding up the J
As a decades long rider of the J I can say that without a doubt, the way to speed up the J is to put it underground - at least to San Jose and Randall (from Embarcadero). Since that is never going to happen it seems the time has finally come for the little fixes, some of which were proposed years ago as part of Muni's TEP project (signal trippers at traffic signals among others). There are about a half dozen switches where the J slows to a crawl (why?) and separate handicapped stops mainly used now by people with strollers that can slow down the ride. Ultimately I believe that the little fixes + the reliability of the Market St subway and fully staffing the line with drivers and streetcars will make the J ride (a little bit) faster.
