Gypsy Turf War In Noe Valley?

The crew at Plumpjack has been telling the following story to anyone who will listen (paraphrased, of course):
Last Friday afternoon a big truck pulled up in front of the 24th Street psychic, someone hopped out [Ed-- referred to as "Gypsies"] and proceeded to “slap around” the Noe psychic. Cops were called, Noe psychic left in an ambulance and filed a police report. The motive? Turf wars. Apparently a psychic at 24th and Mission wasn’t happy that someone new had moved in. For the rest of the weekend, beefy guards were patrolling 24th Street to be sure it didn’t happen again. Next up? Pawn shops!
Anyone see any beefy guards over the last week? How 'bout the ambulance? Is Noe Valley really in the middle of a gypsy turf war?

Regardless, the stories are getting better since the psychic moved into 24th St.

  1. Tragic. If only the Noe psychic had had some way of knowing that was going to happen ...

  4. Every time I walk past the store front I think of the Mad Tv Parody made about Mrs. Cleo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSR-uefPmME She should have seen the turf war coming

  6. see, i thought since they're gypsies and psychics, that they'd do it on the DL and put hexes on each other. times they are a changing...

  7. It is tragic that this Psychic shop even exists in Noe Valley. Now the wonderful psychics have taken to putting flyers under windshield washers on the cars and have the flyers end in the streets. They should be fined. I can't wait until this shop goes out of business.

  8. Just goes to show you - psychics are not really in the predictions business, they are in the entertainment business.

  9. What is wrong with you people??!?!?!? A person was physically assaulted in the heart of our neighborhood and you think it's funny. Noe Valley didn't used to be filled with such heartless snobs.

  10. So far it's all hearsay, so let's not start wearing our hearts on our sleeves just yet until we get the complete facts. You have to admit, there's a slightly surreal edge to the whole thing - I mean, psychic enforcers?

It should be pointed, BTW, that it's unclear if people being referred to as "gypsies" are in fact ethnic gypsies. It's a bit of a stereotype to speak of gypsies having turf wars and the like, so while we're having fun, let's also remember not to come down on an ethnic group that's gotten worse publicity than pretty much any ethnic group (can you think of having your ethnicity be equated with cheating in the language - as in "gypped"? That's harsh).

  11. It's true. I was there. Super bizarre incident in Noe Valley of all places.

I was getting a mani pedi at Glow Day Spa and heard yelling and car doors. Saw the police arrive and an ambulance. Everyone was out on the street staring.

Later the policeman came to the spa and asked whether we witnessed it. He told us that there were two fueding psychic's families fighting and that a woman (one of the psychis?) was beat up. The spa owner said "guess she didn't see that one coming."

Not being able to see the argument directly from my chair, here's what I experienced. Loud arguing on the street, people crowd on the sidewalk and stare, a car arrives (with reinforcements?) and several people get out, the yelling gets louder, the police arrive, ambulance arrives, and stretcher came out.

  12. I'm sorry that someone got hurt, and violence against a woman is never, ever, ever acceptable.

I don't like the presence of the Noe Valley Psychic there. My husband and I are placing bets on how long till it gets shut down. I say by Thanksgiving. He thinks it will be sooner. The rent on that place is $2500 a month. I've never seen anyone in there, so I'm sure that they've not made rent. Noe Valley is not where young (under 30) people hang out. Young people are the ones who frequent those places. They'd be better off in the Haight.
And the people who work there are creepy and solicitous as you walk by. Very annoying and intrusive and over all creepy.

  13. Paying $2500 for what's essentially closet space is crazy. No wonder there haven't been any stores with a real business plan there for a while. Shame on the landlord.

  14. Meanwhile, the neon storefront psychics continue to proliferate. New one on Guerrero near 16th and another one (a few months old) on Mission between 17th and 18th. I've had the opportunity to observe the one on Mission at some length. Only once have I seen what looked like a possible client. Mostly there's just a pack of twenty-something (or younger) girls who trade off on sitting in the doorway, half-heartedly passing out handbills about Miss Angelica. The only people I see going in and out of there are what appear to be boyfriends who are reminiscent of the Sopranos.

I'm still trying to figure out what it is a front for.
